This qualification is available to individuals who wish to run functional training sessions for the independent older adult and those who are already running such sessions without a formal qualification.
Candidates will learn:
- The anatomical and physiological changes that occur to the body systems as a result of the ageing process
- Pre-exercise assessment
- Progression and adaptation
- How to deliver safe and effective functional trainining for the independent older adult
Structure
Candidates will complete the following elements:
- Principles of Functional Training for the Independent Older Adult
- Practical Functional Training for the Independent Older Adult
Total guided learning hours
45 hours in total
Prerequisites
Candidates must be in possession of a CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Fitness Instructing qualification, or other qualification recognised by the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Assessment
Internally assessed via:
- Practical assessment including planning, teaching and evaluating
- Case study/progressive programme
Externally assessed via:
- Theory paper
